Essential Tax Deadlines for Stevenage Small Businesses in 2025
Published 24th February 2025
Missing a tax deadline can cost your business hundreds of pounds in penalties.
As we head into 2025, many Stevenage business owners have asked us about key calendar dates. Whether serving customers from your shop in the indoor market, running your consultancy from home in Poplars, or managing a growing team at the Business & Technology Centre, staying on top of these deadlines is crucial for your business success.
When Does the Tax Year Run?
In the UK, the tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Missing the following dates can trigger automatic penalties from HMRC.
Let's ensure that doesn't happen to you by marking these crucial dates in your calendar.
Self Assessment Deadlines
5 April 2025: End of 2024/25 tax year (last chance to claim overpaid tax from 2019/20)
6 April 2025: Start of 2025/26 tax year
31 July 2025: Second payment on account for 2024/25. Missing this deadline means interest charges on your payment
5 October 2025: Register for Self Assessment if you started trading in 2024/25
31 October 2025: Paper tax return deadline for 2024/25
30 December 2025: Online submission deadline if you want tax under £3,000 collected through PAYE
31 January 2026: Submit your 2024/25 online tax return and pay what you owe, plus the first payment for 2025/26. Late filing triggers an immediate £100 penalty
Limited Company Dates
Many of our Stevenage clients run limited companies, from tech startups in the Business & Technology Centre to established family businesses in the Old Town.
Your key dates are:
Annual accounts: Due 9 months after your financial year-end
Corporation Tax: Due 9 months and 1 day after your year-end
Company Tax Return: Due 12 months after your year-end
Confirmation statement: Due on the anniversary of company incorporation
Missing these deadlines can result in penalties starting at £100 and increasing the longer you delay. One of our clients now sets reminders two months before each deadline, giving plenty of time to gather necessary documentation.
Monthly Employer Tasks
For Stevenage employers, staying on top of PAYE is essential. Late payments can affect your business's reputation with HMRC:
PAYE and NIC payments: Due by 19th (post) or 22nd (online) monthly
6 April 2025: Update payroll for the new tax year
19 April 2025: Submit final payroll update for 2024/25
31 May 2025: Provide P60s to employees
6 July 2025: Submit P11D forms
22 July 2025: Pay Class 1A National Insurance (19 July by post)
VAT Deadlines
For VAT-registered businesses, payments are due one month and seven days after each quarter ends. For example, if your quarter ends 31 March 2025, payment is due by 7 May 2025.
If your business turnover approaches £90,000, keep a close eye on your figures – you may need to register for VAT within 30 days of exceeding this threshold. We recently helped a growing Stevenage café manage this transition smoothly by setting up proper tracking systems early.
